When we begin to think about life and where it comes from, for many it can be almost an impossible question to answer. Although from a Christian perspective we would agree that life came from and was created by God. Nonetheless what does this really mean?
Well, John tells us in chapter one of his gospel, that in Jesus was life and this life was the light of all men. John continues on to say that this light shines in the darkness and the darkness does not comprehend it or understand it. In addition, John writes in chapter five of his first epistle that this life that is in His Son is eternal life.
Therefore, if life comes from the Light, what is darkness and why would people choose darkness? In chapter three of John’s gospel, he tells us that Jesus says “…men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” (John 3:19). Therefore because the evil they’re doing, when brought into light it exposes their sin. Consequently if we have a sin that we have been hiding, it may be convenient to stay in the darkness to avoid exposure. Remaining in darkness means not having to deal with things that are now brought into the light.
The problem with darkness is, WE CAN’T SEE where we are going and therefore are blinded. For example, If I were to turn off all the lights to the point of it being pitch dark, and then I attempt to walk through my house as I normally would, more than likely I will get hurt from bumping into things or even tripping and falling. Now if I can’t navigate in the darkness, then how would I be able to help anyone else walk in it. Jesus tells us in Matthew 15:14 and Luke 6:39, that when the blind lead the blind, both will fall.
Therefore this light, this True Light which only comes through Jesus is where we should walk, not only for ourselves but so that we can help others to walk out of the darkness and into the light as well. What log is in our life right now that we as individuals need to remove in order that we would see clearly so that we can help others?
Matthew 15:14 (NKJV) 14Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”
Luke 6:39-42 (NKJV) 39And He spoke a parable to them: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch? 40A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. 41And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye? 42Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
