The Epistles of John, Walking in the Light of God’s Love was written by Zane C. Hodges. Hodges taught New Testament Greek and exegesis at Dallas Theological Seminary for over 27 years. Zane C. Hodges went on to glory on November 23rd, 2008.
The apostle John not only wrote his Gospel but he wrote three letters in the New Testament. He wrote his gospel to answer the question; what must someone do to be saved? He states this at the end of the gospel in John 20:31, “31 …but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name”. Each of John’s epistles were written for different reasons. According to Hodges, “the stated general aim of the epistle [1st John] is fellowship” (Hodges 34). “Second John is chiefly concerned with the Revisionists, or antichrists” (Hodges 38). Finally according to Hodges, “Third John is a personal letter… …in addressing a problem which has replicated itself in Christian history too many times to count” (Hodges 40).
The epistles of John are crucial letters in the New Testament that are widely misunderstood. Hodges takes his readers verse by verse through each of the epistles of John and gives significant insight into the original meaning of the text as it was originally intended. “Containing only seven chapters as they do, these chapters are still among the most challenging in the Bible” (Hodges 40).
